Hey guys! I've just found out about smart folders is it possible to convert a already created folder into a smart folder?

If so how?

Alternatively is there a way to view files in groups? ie, all word documents grouped, all flash files grouped etc?

You can switch to "list" view (hit command + 2 whilst in the folder) then click the "kind" column to sort by kind.

here you go: Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Organizing related files with Smart Folders

Edit:
oh sry, you wanted to create it from a existing folder, oops :D anyway, what is the point of creating a folder and then making it a smart folder? smart folders are for keeping links to files according to a search

To create a link to a folder, right click it and select create alias, you can now move the alias around and it will get you to te folder anywhere you click it
