I just purchased a MacBook and AirPort Express and have a cable modem. I know that you have to connect AirPort Express to the modem via ethernet cable, but what do I do if the only open port on my modem is a USB port? I'm pulling my hair out, please help!

Your cable modem should have the coax cable from the wall into the modem, and then the ethernet cable going from the modem into the airport express, no longer will you need to run the ethernet from the modem directly into the computer.

Sounds as though you do not have a router. If you have other computers that are not wireless, getting a wireless router or Airport Extreme instead of the AExpress is your first step.
