I get this message repeatedly when I open "network" in system preferences
an "ok" box appears but when i click it it disappears only for a second before
returning??? any ideas??

So yet another one has been affected. This is a widespread problem caused by a security update in 2008, and Apple hasn't fixed it. See here:
