I have a Mac which backs up via Time Machine to an External Hard Drive connected via USB.

I am thinking of buying a Macbook. Will i be able to utilise this existing connection and backup to that same USB Hard Drive via Time Machine on my MacBook.

Thanks

Yes, it's possible to use the same external hard drive to back up two Macs via Time Machine. But consider this:

1. The external will have to be large enough so that it can be divided (partitioned) into two volumes each sized to accommodate the Mac which is being backed up.

2. It can't be attached to both machines at once which means you'll have to do some scheduling to use Time Machine.

3. You'll need to take care that the backup from one machine does not overwrite the backup of the other.

My recommendation: Buy two external hard drives. :)

Regards.
