Want to install OSX 10.4. Can I archive & install straight away?

Currently running osx 10.3.9. Need to update to Tiger (10.3.4) as according to my research my software (photoshop 8, illustrator 11, indesign 3, office 2004) won't work in leopard. I have backed everything up to the hilt but can I do an archive & install straight away so I don't have to reinstall photoshop etc? I have tried once but stopped the install as I couldn't work out if it was a total fresh install or not.
