OS X just spins at start up

I have OS 10.4.11 and it won't start up. It gets to the blue screen, the progress bar spins endlessly. I did hardware check & all seems well. I remember I had force quit an app. before this problem. Keyboard commands at reboot still don't get me to the finder. Please help!!!

Have you tried zapping the PRAM? After chimes on bootup hold down Option, Command, P & R keys together and release only after second or third chime?

YES, I have attempted that to no avail. Stills spins at blue start up page.
It seems to me to be a software prob, but can't access anything.

Have you tried booting from the Tiger install disc and running Repair Drive from there as yet?
