I'm in the UK. If I bought a US iTunes gift card for say $50, would this allow me to purchase something from the US store??

Thanks.

You would need to register for a US store account, but yeah, I do it all the time for apps as it works out cheaper and tv shows as the US store has ones the UK store doesn't
