Dock icons won't leave dock

Your Mac's Specs
13" MBP - 2.7 Ghz, Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM.
Every time I quit an app, the icon stays in the dock. How can I get them to disappear each time like it used to?

13" MBA. 15" MBP. iPhone 4. 3G Pad 2.
When the App is closed drag it off the dock.
If you right click the apps on the Dock you can set them to keep in the Dock for easy access or remove them.
