I've been having this problem more frequently lately, after putting my macbook to sleep(closing the lid) when i try to open it back up the screen stays black and the activity light keeps pulsating as though it is asleep. I've tried pushing keys and the mouse but it stays black. Anyone know why this might happen?

Thanks

Sounds like me in the morning.

Are your running anything when you put the computer to sleep? What have you installed recently/changed?

I have this problem also. I got a new Macbook Pro last December and in the last few weeks only, it has started 'freezing up' after it has gone to sleep by putting the lid down. When you open the lid there is no activity, the screen is black and no amount of button pushing will wake it. The only thing which prompts some action is keeping the power button pushed down for half a minute or so. It then appears to switch off because if you then press the power button briefly, it powers up again. My local Apple Store 'Genius' couldn't find anything wrong.

Try resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). The SMC plays an important role in the power management of the machine which includes the sleep and wake functions. See the following Apple KB article.

Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
