Quick question: I have a desktop G4 PowerPC... i use it for my audio. When i leave my studio for an hour or two, i sometimes shut down.

In terms of long term wear and tear, would you say it's preferable to shut down your computer and restart and hour or two later, or just let it spin until you're going to use it again? I'm just wondering which is better in terms of preserving the components. Thanks for any replies!

This subject has been beaten to death over the years. You'll get pro and con for shutting down, and you'll also get pro and con for not shutting down.

My G4 is always shut down when not in use, apart from if I am just away for an hour

So far its lasted close to 7 years

Agree with louishen shut 'em down. Boot is a natural utility to make sure all is ship shape.

Like someone already said...there are pros & cons to shutting down/leave it running.

I think that it depends on how long you typically are away from the computer. For my needs, if I'm going to be away for a few hours, I leave it running. If I know that it's going to me more than 12 hours I put the computer to "sleep" rather than a full shut-down.

Of course other folks have differing needs.
