Erase Hard Drive

I'm using Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and I'm having trouble clearing the hard drive and reinstalling. I'm able to get to the disk utility thourgh the utilities folder. When I click the erase tab up top and select the hard drive that is to be cleared, all the options are locked and it will not let me erase the selected drive.

Does anyone know what the problem is and knows how to clear the hard drive? Please help!

if youre trying to erase the startup or internal hd, you need to boot from the os x install cd 1, insert the disc, shut down, boot up holding down C and follow the steps. at the part where you select the drive, click options and select erase and install. back up your stuff cause this will remove everything.
