Hey. Quick question about time machine. Currently, I have a 500GB external hard drive. I do have files on it already from my old windows pc, but there should be more then plenty of room to back-up my mac. Will it matter that there are already files on it? Or do I need an empty/re-formatted drive to use with Time Machine?

no.. You don't need a empty drive to use time machine. It will make a new folder for the back-up. Some will use partition. However, you already had files in it so just go ahead and use time machine. Time machine do need lots of space for back up cause it backup your whole HD. If you don't want the whole HD backup. You can exclude some of the folders/files in preference.
