stock 17" 2.8ghz unibody mbp.
uh my pbook has a super drive.. i have to like put the cd almost all the way in before the super drive recognizes the cd and takes in the cd.. is this normal???

Yes. I just got a new Mac Mini which uses the same basic drive. I have to have it in almost all the way before it takes it the rest of the way. I would say less than an inch sticking out. I think you are fine.
