I found out about this a little late, but one Britain's most successful authors, Terry Pratchett, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease last December.

He's made a donation of £1,000,000 toward research into the disease and a BBC documentary about his experiences in the wake of this diagnosis has been broadcast recently and can be caught on the iPlayer.

He is such a talented author. It's a really sad story. :(

Sad? It's a tragedy! What about Discworld? My family are all in shock. But he is a great guy, handling it sensibly, searching all over for possible cures and not just going the 'doctors are the great and all knowing gods' route. Makes me think there might be progress.

That sucks.

He's a great author and has a spin on the fantasy genre that few others do. His team up with Neil Gaiman for Good Omens produced an amazing product.

I made a couple of errors in my original post.

I said it was "last" December that Terry Pratchett was diagnosed, which at the time of writing would have made it during December of 2008. However, he was actually given the diagnosis in December of 2007, so he has been dealing with it now for over a year, although in the BBC documentary he has been in one of his doctors said that the disease had probably began about ten years before it was discovered.

Also, in the same documentary, Terry Pratchett said it was a donation of one million dollars, and not pounds as I've mistakenly written it, that he has made towards Alzheimer's Disease research.

Knew about this when it happened and it rocked me severly

I have read nearly all his books at least 3 times some (mainly the Gaurds books) more than that

This man is a genious and for him to be struck with this disease is stunning especially as it is a rare type of the disease

He has also said he will continue to write as long as he is able.

In my all time top 10 of books, at least 3 of his would be in there and some of my favourite quotes come form terry Pratchetts books

A few of my faves

"Corporal Nobbs," he rasped, "why are you kicking people when they're down?"
"Safest way, sir," said Nobby. - Guards Guards

He was said to have the body of a twenty-five year old, although no one knew where he kept it.
