avi to mpeg4 converter

Hi,
I have just bought an AppleTV and want to convert
my DVD,s VOB & AVI files to MPeg4 to play on my AppleTV

Does anybody know of any free easy to use ie idiot proof haha
software I can download & use.
Is Mpeg4 the best format to use.
Any tips.

Use Handbrake to convert DVDs. I have found quicktime pro to be the easiest for converting AVIs but it's not free. Both have presets for AppleTV so you don't have to figure out the settings.

I've been using iSquint for the avi -> mp4. I haven't found a vob -> x that I care for yet

I use MPEG Streamclip to change avi's to iPod/Apple TV ready. Not sure what other file formats it converts, but believe it does most types.
