i have a new macbook and i was having a problem with it going to sleep, and the guy said to archive and install. i had 14 more gigs available before i started this and i wanted to know if there was a way to get that memory back? because i think that the 14 gigs is the backup files that i dont need anymore

If you did an archive and install, the 14 Gb of space that's missing is the backup which was made by the system. If you feel you no longer need it, you can delete the folder.

As for the sleep problem: Follow the directions as given in this Apple KB article:

Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Regards.
