• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I am trying to create backups of my DVDs and copy from one DVD to another through the disk utility. When I burn the DVD (at max. possible 8X) the DVD is turning out VERY choppy. The picture will freeze, be extremely pixel-ly, or the sound will be choppy. Any suggestions? Is there a better way to copy DVDs than with the disk utility (that's free!)??

Tip # 1 for burning video DVD's - the same whether on a Mac or Windows or a Linux box - pretty much never use max speed - you're only asking for issues and coasters. 2x to 4x max is recommended - this depending on the burner.

You may also have a bad drive. My first DVD burner was used, and several years old. Every movie I ever burned with it was exactly as you described (or just didn't work at all). It was also slower at ripping/copying audio CDs. Fortunately, burners aren't that expensive.

Im not sure if it works any better or worse but I've used "Burn" with great success.

Burn is a great program, but choppy playback is most likely a hardware problem - either the discs were in bad shape before burning or the drive is failing.
