Playing video files

After years of Windows frustration, I'm now a newbie militant Mac nut. I finally talked my niece and her husband into buying an iMac for their home. They love it, but now when they receive an email with a video in it, they can't play it.

I was able to play videos from day one when I got my MacBook. Do they need to download something? TIA.

depends on what the video format is, but if you use VLC Player, then you can play anything

some videos on the net are .wmv which is a windows specific format, but you can get a plugin called Flip4MacWMV which enables quicktime to play those too

... and don't forget Perian which will let you play pretty much any video file in Quicktime/Front Row etc

WMV will also open in VLC, unless they are DRM protected or use a weird version of the codec. MPlayer is good too.
