What is the best way to connect my MBP to my new 1TB WD My Book?

My wife just grabbed me a new 1TB WD My Book Home Edition external hard drive. I am going to use firewire to connect to the drive. My question is: what is the best software package to use to connect to the drive? I will be using it to backup two macbooks (one pro and one non-pro). Which software should I use, the Western Digital software or time-machine? Will the time machine allow me to use two macbooks on the same external drive?

Any help would be appreciated.

Time Machine is the way to go, it can back up multiple computers onto the same drive.
