Hello,

I am posting to get more people, having this issue, supporting us by:

  1. posting a Message into the apple thread here Apple Support Display Anomalies like: "Same problem here with ATI X1600"
  2. Sending a feedback to apple by using this link: Apple Feedback

Issue description:
Horizontal lines, Distorted graphics, Triangled Color Gradients leading to System hangs thru Damaged GPU ATI X1600

* Many Users experienced a effect of "Distorted Video". For short it looks like this:

http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/3382/picture123sp6.pngand it causes your system to hang after a while.

* it's your ATI X1600 GPU, if you are affected
* The errors you see are stored in your graphics in your memory. They created by your damaged GPU you even can drag and screenshot them
* your GPU is damaged and the only solution: Replace your Logicboard, we experienced by other users with AppleCare
* the problem, is well known by us but ignored by apple: (link to apple discussions display anomalies)

-> Apple - Support - Discussions -

* there is a similar Problem about that with NVIDIA GPU's in this case apple is replacing your board for free?

-> MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues

* it's heat related but it occurs at 50 C° what shouldn't be
* this problem is getting worse and if you have some pixels first, the lines, system hangs and colored triangles will follow later on, be sure
* answer from mac genius are 'replace motherboard' no further detailed information. If you don't have AppleCare, a Original Note from AppleCare: "Buy a new Mac"
* If you are affected and may don't know it yet: First error you will see is a single green pixel, which you can drag around if it appears in a window

thanks for your support, if there are enough people reporting that problem to them, apple may do something about it

regards

And some other nice people have removed that petition for some reason.

However, the petition regarding MacBook Pro ATI X1600 problems has reborn elsewhere:
Failing ATI X1600 in Apple MacBook Pro Petition

Anybody affected, please participate. We might be able to get somewhere with this only if there is big enough dissatisfaction base.

What a random thread by someone who has not followed through with an issue.
If you put enough effort in (as much as you did with this thread), I have no doubt the Apple would look after you.
Sometimes in life things don't run as smoothly as we would like, and it is then, that we have to keep our composure and push in a non hostile manner.
From seeing this thread, I do not believe that you have managed to do this.
Warranty or not, Apple care or not, persistence with respect, knowledge, information, and consumer rights can go a long way!

adding to that, if you want to go in the way of petitions, try going for better treatment of animals or humans, environment, and the list can go on.... but I think that I have made my point!

Yesterday this issue appeared for the first time on my Macbook Pro (late 2006) and the Apple assistance center told me that I have to replace the logic board for 740 euro.

Speaking with the technician, I've understood that this is a common issue on this Macbook with this ATI X1600, and it is usually caused by heat.

What do you think about a class action? Maybe against ATI?

I've looked over the web and I've found the "Hagens Berman LLP".

This is their website and it is possible to tell them about our claim (there is a button on the left): Hagens Berman
