I recently signed up to 3webXS High Speed DSL. It claims that it is incompatible with a mac. I know that their connection and start up software is windows only. but since my router is the first thing connected to the modem, from what i figure my mac should work as just something wirelessly connected to my router. The router is connecting to the modem and the dsl and just sharing it with my mac right? If the connection drops would the router reconnect the connection?

You're on the right track. The router will basically handle routing traffic on your private network to the public Internet. It shouldn't matter what devices are attached to the router, because once your computer is attached to the router, all it knows is that it's on a network - it could care less who the provider is.

Ask the company if their service will work with your router. If they say yes, ask them if you can establish an account and bring the modem out of "walled garden" mode without having to install their software.
