Office mac compatibility with windows office files

24 inch, 2.8ghz, 4gig RAM iMac
I was just wondering if office for mac is compatible with the files that windows office has such as .docx files?
i have a few docx files that are saved on my external hard drive from my windows machine and im just doin the research b4 i buy office for mac

Yes office 2008's default file format is the new XML based file formats
