Recording sound?

Is there a way to record just the sound on my macbook? I know I can with video via isight, but is there a way just to record what is being said? We are allowed to record class notes, but I really don't want to run my video the whole time. Thanks.

I know you can record audio in Word 2008 but I'm not sure of any standard Mac software that does it apart from Garage Band.
