They are pretty innexpensive

I have put a dual layer Pioneer in my G4, have had absolutelly no problems whatsoever

did u see a big difference in the speed with burning dvd & cds? I have the stock card in there right now. Should i get an upgrade?

Somewhat like Louishen, I have two Pioneer dual-layer drives, a 112D and a 115D. Both are external, both work very well. The 115 does work faster than the 112, that's to be expected, but burning speed is or can be a mixed bag. If it's data, there's seldom a problem going for 20x, but if it's video and audio, the general rule is 'slower is better' (for reproduction quality).

I'm not at home at present, so cannot verify this, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but check your System Profiler to see what speeds are supported by the OS once you have the new optical drive installed.

Pioneer = good choice.

Another vote for the Pioneer, model DVR-115D DL which is sold as 18X. Pioneer superdrives need no drivers as they are recognised as native by Macs.

It sure is quicker than the old 106 using Toast 8 Titanium.

I'd get a samsung. I see too many pioneer failures on a daily basis. rare to see the samsungs die off.
