Hello Macworld,

I need help, I have an imac running mac os x 10.4.11. Now everything was going nice for a really long time but from past one week, I cannot access internet. I have a Huwaei modem WA1003 and everything works if I plug in an XP machine and create the PPPOE connection. It just stopped working.

:-(

Now it gives a Popup saying authentication failed
or could not find PPoe server

In system event log it says "PPPoE connection failed, no route to host". Any pointers to help me troubleshoot the issue will help.

TIA,
macfanatic

If it was working OK for a long time and now it isn't, something had to change. You didn't say how your iMac is getting the signal. Wireless or ethernet? And, are you using a router in addition to the modem?

Either way, check the settings for your router (if you're using one) and modem. Also the network settings in System Preferences.

Post back with info on how your system is setup.

Regards.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for a quick response, my ADSL provider has given me a
Huawei Quickway WA1003A, no routers. I'm using it over ethernet.
I tried using it against another user on the same machine and it worked for 15-20 minutes and then went down. I am pasting in the ifconfig dump for your reference. Do let me know what you think.
Thanks again, its so much better if someone out there is ready to help :)
Regards,

I just downloaded the manual for the Huawei WA1003A. Actually the unit is a modem and wireless router all in one. So yes, you do have a router. :)

(BTW, the manual does not say much at all if anything concerning internal settings.) It does show a master reset on the rear which can be pressed to get everything back to factory settings. So there must be a way to access the internal settings - maybe from a menu by using its IP address.

However, since you have it hooked up via ethernet cable to your machine, we can dispense with any wireless troubles. The ifconfig dump doesn't tell us much. About the only thing I could see is the two attempts it made at connecting before it died.

Just my opinion here.... but it looks like either you have line troubles or the Huawei is intermittent (defective). The first thing I would do is contact your ISP and have them run diagnostics over the line to the modem. If they say everything is OK, ask them to switch out the modem for another.

The trouble could be coming from your machine (hardware) but let's leave that until last.

Regards.

Hi,
Thanks, resetting to factory settings I had already tried :( .The problem is, it works fine with the xp laptop I borrowed. ISP support guys haven't heard of Mac :p ... I am in India :). Let me try and get hold of a different modem.
This will take some time. Thanks again,
:)
