Hello fellas, I'm new to the site and this is my first post!! :)

ok so, a couple of days ago i upgraded my 120GB HDD to a 500GB one and partioned it in boot camp. I went ahead and installed windows xp and everything went smoothly (even the leopard driver install on windows) but now i'm having a problem in Mac OS X. I was about to burn a DVD today and when i put in the disc nothing happens. You can hear the drive trying to read/load the disc or whatever but after about 30-45 seconds it just ejects the disc without giving me an error code or anything. I have toast 9 and before the windows install everytime i put in a disc it would launch, now after that it won't launch either (since leopard doesn't detect the disc). What do you guys think might be the problem? Thanks in advance! :)

btw the computer is a
MacBook Pro
2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo
2GB of Ram
running leopard 10.5.6

As a test try to burn or read a DVD in Windows. If you run across the same problem in Windows, it may be the drive needs cleaning or is acting up.

Try cleaning the drive first with a cleaning disk that can be purchased at Radio Shack or just about any store that has computer accessories. I believe even Wal-Mart sells them. If cleaning doesn't help, the drive may be defective and might have to be replaced.

Regards.

yeah i tried burning a cd in windows and the exact same thing happened...and its just not w/ blank cds or dvds, it also did it when i put in a movie in the drive. But yeah, how would i go about replacing the drivers in the case that the cleaning disk does not solve the problem? sorry i'm kinda of a noob when it comes to drivers and such...or can someone point me to a thread where it has already been discussed? thanks.

This is frustrating...stupid thing was fine on saturday when i installed windows!!!

Reinstalling software drivers is not going to help if the DVD drive (hardware) is defective. As I said before, try cleaning the drive first.

Is the machine still under warranty? If it is, take it on in to Apple (make an appointment first).

If no warranty.

Replacing the DVD drive: Go to iFixit: iPod, iBook, & PowerBook Parts and Accessories and look up your model machine. Read through the step by step instructions on how to do the job yourself. They also sell DVD drive exact replacements for Mac machines.

Regards.

yeah its still covered under the applecare plan...guess i'll just make an appt. and kill two birds w/ one stone...my iphone has 2-3 dead pixels so this will save me a an extra trip to the apple store. Thanks for the help.

One last question...does it matter that i replaced the original HDD...i believe i've read somewhere on here that some techs at the genious bar won't touch the machine if the hard drive has been replaced. Any truth to this?

If you've opened the machine you have probably voided the warranty. But then, if you can upgrade a hard drive, you can put a new DVD-R in yourself.

Your Windows emulator software (BootCamp) is probably trying to capture the cd/dvd. Go to BootCamp/Windows and disable the drive capture and then you should be able to use it under OS X. I have the same problem with VMware Fusion. I keep forgetting and it gets me everytime.
