Macbook Pro (Early 2008) 2.5Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, NVidia 8600 GT 512 MB Video RAM, 250 GB HDD
I'm going to order a new Macbook (my first Mac). I was considering maxing out the RAM to 4GB while ordering it. Should I buy it from Apple or from an after market vendor like Crucial?
Anyone here who upgraded the memory on their unibody Macbooks with Crucial RAM?

Aftermarket without question. It will be a fraction of the cost and just as good. A 5 minute job.

Crucial or Newegg gets my vote.

I think OWC has it cheaper than Crucial and Newegg. I haven't checked prices in like a few weeks so things might be different now.

That's if you care about brand name or not. >_>"

The savings is not as drastic as it has been with DD2.

DDR3 used by the new Mac's hasn't dropped in price by that much yet.
You'll still save $25-$60 buying 4GB aftermarket vs paying Apple for the upgrade from 2 to 4.
And some places (I think OWC still does this) will buy the 2GB you're pulling out of the machine, though I would probably keep them through the warranty period.

aluminum MacBook: 2.4GHZ Core 2 Duo, 3GB DDR3 RAM, NVIDEA GeForce 9400M, 250 GB HDD (32GB for Vista)
I just upgraded the RAM in my aluminum MacBook to 3GB. The correct MB RAM (which is listed as being for only the MBP but they use the same RAM so no problem) from iRam on Newegg.com goes for $43 per 2GB stick and shipping was only $4. You'd end up spending less than $100 when Apple charges $300 aftermarket or $150 with the computer (only an online option however). This iRam works GREAT, no different than what you'd get from Apple, and it has great reviews too. Defiantly go with the iRam on Newegg.com!
