time capsule won't extend my network!

MacbookPro 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, 250GB @5200 rpm Hard Drive, OS X 10.5
I've got a 500GB Time Capsule that I'm trying to use to extend my existing router's signal to the upstairs bedrooms. The airport utility will see the network I'm attempting to extend, but the TC will not connect to it. It says it can't find it. How can I solve this? I appreciate your time!
