What software can add color to B&W photos??

Hey Y'all,

I always see a ton of people who take B&W photos but they will keep the red from the picture and keep everything B&W. What software can I do that with and where can I get it? Can I download it for free anywhere?

only thing i can think of is photoshop.. that is what i use. got any picture you need help with?

they are color photos (not b/w). they just use layers (where one is b/w and the other is color).

with the b/w layer on top, they simply erase away where they want the color to show thru.

The method is called "selective color" and it can be done in Photoshop and Lightroom among others.

Personally not a fan of this method myself but I hope the info helps.
