In iTunes when you go under "info" for a song, you have the option of checking a box that says "this song is part of a compilation."
What does this mean? What does it do?
There has to be a point in checking this, right?

It places all of the music in the iTunes folder in a folder called Compilations instead of by artist

If you are very picky with categorization of your Music and you want to have Albums in a compilation folder you would use it

iTunes cateogorises music by Artist and Album, respectively. So when u have a Coldplay album and you import it to your hard drive, it creates a folder "Coldplay" and then a folder inside it, for example, "Parachutes", and then all the tracks inside it.

But, when u have an album that has tons of Artists, you may to check the part of a compilation option coz it will create loads of folders of Artist's names and an Album folder inside it, but only copy the respective one track in each folder. You end up having a messed up music folder.

This option is quite useful when u have an Album with Various Artists.

Hope that helps...

But weirdly enough the iPod doesn't recognise the compilations folder and sorts the tracks into individual artists again, which makes the whole concept pointless for me. (this is on a 3rd gen btw)
