iphoto and iPod Touch sync

Ok so I just got an itouch for Christmas. I synced my itouch with my iphotos and everything worked fine. So today I plugged my itouch into my mac and received a message saying there was an update for my itouch. So of course I proceed on with the update. Well now all my photos are missing from both my itouch and iphotos. What happened where did everything go? Is there any way I can recover the photos.

time machine if you have a mac..?

Sync it again?
