Adjusting Mouse travel

Is there a mouse adjustment that adjusts the distance a mouse travels across the screen in reference to the distance you move the mouse? Something changed, as I was able to move the mouse cursor across my complete screen without having to pick it up off the pad to get to the other side. I adjusted the mouse speed and that seems to help, but the cursor moves way to fast for my liking.

If you are using Leopard, your post does not say, go into Systems Prefences>Keyboard and Mouse>Mouse and adjust there.

Yes I understand that, but what setting controls distance?
