external hd dumped files into new mac

I just recieved a new macbook. I plugged my external hd into it to play some music I have stored. It then preceeded to dump all the files into the laptop. Any ideas how to just play the files from the external hard drive and delete all the imported files?

I can't find a Pref in iTunes that prevents it, someone else may know, but I'd suggest you use VLC Player for the audio from your ehd. A workaround only I realise, but at least VLC doesn't try to import tracks, it simply plays them.
