For two successive nights now I've had to force shutdown of my eMac by holding the power button in. No problems with the computer when it's operating, software works as it should. The only thing I wonder about is the longer-than-usual startup time, but I've attributed that to the last Security update. Startup 'bong' is prompt, and there are no unusual noises from the HD.

Try zapping the PRAM and NVRAM if you haven't already done so. Power settings may have suffered brain damage after the last security update.

Regards.

First off powered USB hubs have been known to prevent shut down from the menu. if you have a powered hub, try turning it off. Also worth disconnecting unpowered hub. USB modems are a particular problem whilst connected.

Hmm, I use a powered hub, and have done for over a year. It's never prevented a shutdown before now, but I'll try your suggestion. Thanks.

Update: It appears to have cured itself, no problem shutting down last night.
