Sometimes (2 out of 5) when I turn on my iMac G5 using the airport extreme card, It is not automatically connected to my router (Netgear WGR614v2). I then have to open the internet connection>>click the network tab (mine is never listed)>>chose other>>type my network name, then connect. I never have any problems with connection until I turn off the computer. My router is set for access control (only my 2 wireless can connect) and does not broadcast name (SSID). My other wireless connection is a laptop that never connects unless I insert PC card. New to Mac, is there some setting that I'm missing or is just my router?

In network settings under the airport tab there should be a spot where you can say:

Automatically connect to: <yournetwork>

and that should do it. Its not automatically connecting because you arent broadcasting your SSID.
