when using firefox 3 with my macbook pro, quite often when I switch tabs, type in the address bar etc... the whole thing freezes for 3-6 seconds and my mouse turns into a beach ball. How can I fix this?

I don't have that.

Do you let your Mac run at night so it can run its maintenance programs?

If not, you want to delete the cache files and reset your pram every once in a while. Might also try something like macpilot.

I have a macbook pro 15" Mac OS X Version 10.5.4, some details:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B03
SMC Version: 1.27f1
Serial Number: W88134D0YJY
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

I am running the net through a university network at Nottingham university.

Another problem is that I can only use firefox with my mac. Safari and all other web browsers doesnt seem to work. I think its because I cant change the settings of other browsers to automatically detect proxy settings.

Have a chat with your University Network Administrator ....

The university network may be configured in such a way that it requires some specific settings in you browser to make it work.

Hope it helps.

Cheers
