I have a movie I would like to copy to a DVD so that it can be played on my friends DVD player.

The movie is in .AVi format

Check out a program called MPEG Streamclip. Works like a charm.

ideally I would like a program that converts and burns the DVD. I found a program called visualhub but it is not very reliable

did you try iDVD and get an error?

i know i've burned avi filed with iDVD, conversion just takes a while, and i'd assume some codecs might be impossible with iDVD.
