Macbook does not see monitor???

Hi, I have a macbook.

I have a 22" LG screen which I'm trying to plug into the mini DVI port on my macbook. I have the adapter...

When I plug in the monitor the macbook screen goes blue and then comes back the same as before (second screen not displaying anything).
