Naming files

Does anybody have a quick reference for how to name files properly so that:
1. They work on PC and Mac
2. They work in all applications

Example: Can I name files "this file.doc" or should I name it "this_file.doc" or what about "this-file.doc?"

Mac Mini Core i7 2012 | White 2009 MacBook 2 Ghz | 733 Mhz G4 Quicksilver
spaces are fine cross platform, you only need to use underscores and hyphens when naming files for webpages

also just make sure the file extension is there (.doc in this case)

and dont begin a filename with a period, it will become a hidden file in OS X

you can actually use spaces for web file names, it's just ugly when you end up with something like:

mywebsite.com/a%20picture%20 of%20me.jpg
