I'm trying to convert .mp3 to .m4a format. I downloaded Switch and it does not appear to come with the option to convert to .m4a, despite the fact that screenshots of the application indicated that it is supposed to. Any thoughts?

Other recommendations on how to convert .mp3 to .m4a?

iTunes will do it.

Load the mp3s in to iTunes

In iTunes preferences > General > Import CD > Import settings select AAC encoder as the import format

select your MP3s in itunes and select create AAC version in the iTunes advanced menu

AFAIK, only Switch Plus will convert to .mp4, and it's a purchase version.

I use and recommend Sound Converter, but again you're restricted, this time to 500 Kb sound files. [reminds self to buy SC]
