Any way to get OS X to show examples of fonts - you know, the font name written in the font itself? Or is this something that isn't a feature of any of the software that a Mac comes with?

Only way I know is to use the app 'Font Book' found in your Applications folder.

I'm one of those, what I see is what I get and have never gone about messing with them.
When I have gone to look to change one, I'm with you. But, seems all the programs are written based on assuming if we want to change a font, we must already know what they look like. I don't, and don't particularly care to clog my brain being able to name a font by looking at it.

Seems to be a lot of folks use different Font management tools
