Booting off a external Drive via USB

I've read that a bootable image can be made via firewire. Is it possible to do the same via USB?

Silver M1 iMac 512/16/8/8 macOS 11.6
Tell us about your Mac, model etc as some can boot from USB2 and others cannot and must use Firewire.

Your MBP can boot from either Firewire or USB 2.
