New failed HDD

Hi

I just bought myself a new WD 320GB Scorpio Black 7200rpm 2.5" HDD to upgrade from my 100GB HDD that came with my MBP.

My MBP has no problem recognising and booting from my origional 100GB HDD. but after installing my new 320BG HDD, the OSX installation disks don't see the new drive, so I can't install the OS to it, hense making it useless.

Has anyone else had this problem with this drive?

Does 'Disk Utility' see the drive at all?

You might need to open the disk utility and format the drive as HFS+

When you buy new harddrives, they don't come formatted at all, it's just a big blank disk.

ahh, that might be it. I'll give it a go.

It seems strange as I can literally swap the hdd with my old one (hence i'm typing now) and it works fine without changing any connections.

I'll give it a go and let you know how it goes

It was exactly as u said. Opened disk utility, it saw the drive, I formatted it to journal and it is installing as I type this. Thanks for the advice, I thought I was delivered a faulty drive

Awesome, glad it worked out for you. Don't be alarmed when you only get 289~GB from it after a format. It's 100% normal, so don't worry.

I got between 290 and 299gb once formatted, forget the exact amount. I'm just happy that I'll have enough space to vmware windows on it so I can use it for work. Our support call logging software is called csupport, which only works on IE, bit at least I can do everything else on osx

Now set up the original drive as an external the MBP will boot from it if you install Leopard on it. Use it for saving photos etc and emergencies.
