Well the max RAM for the G3 iBook is 640, so you are already maxed out there. The hard drive can be upgraded, but it's a pretty tricky job. The G3 iBooks, in my opinion, are not very useful as modern machines. They are extremely slow for web browsing, and won't run many modern applications, including OS X Leopard. The best upgrade would be to look for at least a G4, but preferably an Intel Mac.

That being said, I still keep one around for classic gaming.

Yeah G3 iBooks are VERY slow compared to the G4 iBooks. I would suggest at least getting a 600MHz g4 iBook. It really depends on how much you have to spend, and what you do on computers.

Was there ever such a thing as a 600 Mhz G4 iBook? I believe the slowest one was 800 Mhz. The 600 Mhz was a G3.

Yeah that's what happens when you're half asleep typing. Slowest G4 is 800MHz for iBooks.

just to add to the OPs question..i'm searching for a backup notebook to carry to class in my bag. would a 12" G3 be useless for running Safari and some form of Office?? mostly Word,PowerPoint, Safari/Firefox are all i intend to use on it besides the random MP3 or movie that i'll watch/listen in between classes.

I wouldn't run safari on a G3. I don't like safari anyways, it's significantly slower than firefox. But yeah a G3 if it's like 800MHz would run word, powerpoint and basic firefox websites fine.

ibook G3

I have an ibook G3 700 mhz and 640 mb ram. It works fine for running 2004 office and websurfing and it is not slow at all. If thats all you need, you should be fine.

Depends what your idea of "Slow" is.
Web surf on my powerbook and then go back to your iBook and you'll see what I'm talking about.
