Wife bought me the Nikon D300 body for X-Mas. (yay!) I then bought myself the following:

Nikkor 50mm 1.8 prime
Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4.5 macro HSM
Nikkor 70-300 AF-S ED 4.5-5.6 (VR)

And a few other goodies (love the ThinkTank Streetwalker HD backpack) for good measure. I can't get enough time in w/this sweet combo, absolutely love it to pieces. Now I'm waiting for a bit of nicer weather. I originally was thinking about the D90, but don't care about the movie mode at all, and was more concerned with the added control and features offered on the 300. Well worth the extra cash IMO.

2 D2x's, 1 D3, and a load of lenses, flashes, bags.....

Funny the D3 is a killer camera much better than the D2x, but I shoot so much motor sports where you just cant get close enough I like the "crop factor of DX" and have not really used the 3 much

Just recently got myself a D90 with the 18-105 kit lens. I'm lovin' it so far!

Got a lot to learn but I do now find that when I go back to use my super-zoom (Kodak z612) it just feels so toy like!

I'm enjoying trying a few new things and already really want to consider a new lens (or 2). I did think it would take a while for me to out-grow the kit lens.

Maybe I'm trying to run before being able to walk......

You could "run" with a 50mm F1.8D. If you do fall it'll be a $100 ouch. Not too bad. Nice for subject isolation. One of Nikon's better performers regardless of price.

Couple of other recommends...

SB-600 - Bounce flash & can control off camera with the D900

AF35mm F2 - A slightly wider field of view than the 50mm. Sightly wider price. Can focus pretty close too.

Prob a dumb question, but how are you liking the MKII? I bet the output is amazing. I had the MKI and it produced some of my favorite images. I also loved some of the lenses I had with it. Especially the 35L, 135L, and 70-200F4IS.

I started Nikon years ago and tried Canon for about two months. Couldn't break my old habits, so I'm back shooting a D700. My favorites now are the Sigma 50 1.4 and 105DC F2.

It's so purty.

Hi all

I just purchased my first digital SLR the Canon 1000D and upgraded the lenses to the 18-55mm IS and also upgraded to IS in the 75-300mm as well getting great results but would like to get one lens for photographing my young lad who races radio controlled cars at a national level.

What lens would you recommend now keep in mind i dont want to spend $7000+ on a lens but would like something that i can get close with and have excellent quality... The 75_300IS is good but can i get better was looking at the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM or this one EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM

Any one point me in the right direction or are these lenses beyond what my camera can throw at it.......or keep plodding along with what i have.

Here is a picture i took on the weekend... 75_300 IS lens

I am currently renting a lense to see how it works for what I shoot. Currently trying out the 70-200 f2.8L USM (non IS) for getting shots at my daughters indoor competitive cheerleading events. I loved it and after trying out a few others will make a decision on which to buy... just a suggestion about the renting the lenses.

The 100-400L would definitely be an upgrade...It depends if you have the $$$$. That lense is $1700-1800 Cdn !!!

I have used a Canon EOS 5D, EOS 40D, EOS 1D Mark III, Nikon D80, D700, and the D3. The amount of red band glass (L) and VR glass I have used is expansive, to say the least. I have sold off every piece of dSLR equipment I own though and have settled with the Leica D-LUX 4 as my camera of choice based on size, performance and the quality and length of service provided by Leica.

I do also like the Hasselblad 500 C/M with interchangeable focusing screen but that might a bit too old school for the lot of you.

I plan on getting a nice rangefinder by the end of this year, probably the Leica M8.2 if nobody else steps up to the plate by then.

Try and avoid excess focal length ranges in lenses at all cost because chances are, they aren't worth the money you're going to cop out for it.

The 100-400mm with variable aperture is by far the best bang for the buck and excellent at it's long and wide end. In fact, this lens takes teleconverters EXTREMELY well.

One thing to bear in mind about this lens is that it has a unique push/pull zoom functionality and is not controlled by a damp ring. I personally liked it when I used it, but some may find it rather cumbersome when being used to a different zooming workflow.

I suggest you rent this lens (and any other expensive lens) before purchase just to see if it is right for you.

I hope this helped.

I use a Panasonic DMC-FZ8. Purchased it Summer 2007.

Really nice to use: 7MP, RAW Mode, Full Manual mode etc, excellent 12x Optical Zoom and I like how if you set it to 3MP you get 18x optical zoom.

How do you import the RAW photos please?

I have a Panasonic Lumix G1 and none of the Apple software can read the RAW files. I have to use the SilkyPix software which came with the camera to do that, which makes it fairly pointless to use RAW really.

Nikon D90 and Nikkor 18-200 lens. Can't say I 'use' it yet - still learning, but I'm getting there. Also old Nikon Coolpix 4300 for travelling light and new Sony Cypershot 950 for travelling even lighter. All take great pictures and for snapshots all are just great (perhaps it's the photographer?). D90 just has the edge on versatility though :)
