You may need to install Boot Camp update 2.1 prior to installing SP3.

Apple - Downloads - Application Updates - Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows XP

Also, Microsoft service packs are compressed and usually require quite a bit of HDD space to do the uncompressing and more importantly, the saving of all the old files and folders which are replaced.

If you still have problems after applying the BC 2.1 update, you might have to make your BC partition larger. You can do that with either the free "CampTune" preview from Paragon software, or by downloading the free "WinClone" app.

CampTune = CampTune for Mac OS X - Free Download

WinClone = Download Winclone for Mac - Clone your Boot Camp partition. MacUpdate Mac Backup Software Downloads

Regards.

I have also come across (link) this problem. I recall being told that I did not need to install the BC 2.1 update because I was using Windows XP. I ordered Service Pack 3 CD from Microsoft, but I haven't gotten that the nerve to do the update. I don't want to hose my system on an update that may be a little buggy.
