Windows will not install on an external drive regardless of which method you use - Boot Camp will not work. That's a Microsoft limitation and has nothing to do with OS X or Apple.

Install either XP SP2 Full or Vista Full on your Macintosh HD using either Boot Camp or VM software. If you're a gamer, Boot Camp is the way to go.

Regards.

Like chscag said, the only way to install Windows on an external hard drive is via virtualization software like VMWare Fusion and Parallels Desktop. If you wish to install it via Boot Camp then you are limited to the built in hard drive.
