closing for external display but no sleep?

what is the easiest way to be able to close my macbook, have it turn off the display but yet then output to my 22" external monitor that it is hooked up to? i know there is a way but i cannto figure it out. btw i am using a wireless mouse and keyboard as well

Aluminium Macbook 2.4 Ghz 4GB RAM, SSD 24" Samsung Display, iPhone 4, iPad 2
Close the macbook, then tap your external keyboard a few times to wake the mac. (Make sure your display is plugged in though!)

If you're using bluetooth keyboard & mouse then make sure that you enable the option of allowing your computer to be woken up by bluetooth keyboard & mouse in System Preferences. Picture 1.png
