spotlight finds results that don't contain my search words

I've noticed recently that spotlight sometimes finds results that don't contain the words I searched for. Some of the results are correct, but others, for example a word doc that I open and then search internally for the word I was spotlight searching for, don't contain that word at all. What gives? Could it be that these false results are because the document once had the search words, even though they've been since deleted?
