I left my dotters macbook in sleep mode when I went wawy for a week, she was outta town too. When I returned the battery was fully discharged and would not take a charge.
This was an 18 month old Macbook. I called the support line and they shipped out a replacement at no cost.
This is better service than I expected.
They also replaced a 2 year old Emac with leaking caps for free with a Core2 Imac which was quite the upgrade, they even migrated all the data and and apps.
Neither system had applecare.
So far my experience with Apple and service has been pretty darn good.
Everything I have now has applecare
